| Jul 4, 2026, 12:46 AM | Gelissa | Submitted milestone | Grip Modelling, Pruning, Simplification and Part Planning I | In Progress → Submitted | Week 1 - Jul 6th update What's been done: - Model is now scaled to 1/12th (~58mm for the whole gun, handle itself ~35mm). - Re-topo'd the handle geometry. - Omitted the built-in keys that were originally modelled. - Sliced in half in Bambu Studio, ran a test preview to see how much detail will be washed out. - Tested different scalings in Bambu Studio to compare resolution preservation at increment values. ---------- Re-topoing went by much faster once I realized there was no necessity for clean topology since this model was not going to be deformed and the STL export would triangulate everything anyhow. Nonetheless, this will make it much easier for me to make any further modifications without having to wrangle the raw triangulated topology from Plasticity's OBJ export operation. The modified geometry is a lot more low-res as well, but the sharp facets will not be a problem at the scale ratios we're working at. It has the added benefit of allowing us to simplify the model to its essential features with more clarity. I've split the handle into 2 clean halves down the middle, considering its size at 1/12th, I would not recommend splitting it further for fear of bed adhesion and general print difficulties. For this week, we should aim to lock in the scale we'd like to proceed with first. I've done a basic test run of the handle model in Bambu studio to see how the slicer will process its finer details as pictured in '4. Slicer Scale Test'. At our intended scale of 1/12th, there is significant loss of detail. I've tried scales of 1/8 and 1/6 and they fare much better with more visual details coming through clearer. I've highlighted the features of the handle that are at most risk of being washed out in '6. Detail Loss - Risk Assessment'. Red means it *will* lose detail at 1/12th, and yellow means there is some loss of detail but otherwise generally recognizable. Two suggestions I can recommend from my end: 1. If the 1/12th scale is still desired, I can try to 'break up' the proportions of our High-risk features, increasing them in size relative to everything else so the slicer can pick them up more clearly. This will deviate away from the original proportions of the source model. We can run more tests in the slicer to preview what the end result would look like. 2.If size ratio is malleable, we can opt to work on a larger scale than 1/12th, keeping modifications to the original design to a minimum as compared to option 1. I've included the .3MF file for Bambu studio that includes the STLs as pictured in the drive so that we can inspect them on our respective devices. I have yet to run a test print myself as of writing this. The cubes are there to ensure scale proportions are maintained during Maya's export. They can be ignored. The test preview was done with 0.08 Layer height, other layer heights only exacerbated the loss of detail at 1/12th. Let me know your thoughts! -Gelissa |
